What are the different types of plywood?

Plywood, in normal terms, we can refer it as Wood panels made of multi layered veneer. These are glued together. Plywood is a generic term that refers to all types of engineered wood panels. Some of the common types of plywood are as follows:

plywood suppliers

a)Softwood Plywood:

It is one of the widely used plywood product that is made of soft veneer. The layers are piled at a right angle to each other and stick together. This usually comes in 4’x 8’ sheets. It is also available in 5’ x 5’ sheets.

This plywood is available in different grades based on the application. This is most commonly used in building wall trades. It is also used in construction of houses and crates. It is an excellent product for building homes.

b)Hardwood Plywood:

This is commonly used for making cabinet and furniture.  Hardwood plywood is manufactured in the similar manner as Softwood plywood except the exterior layers.  Common hardwood plywood includes ash, oak, red oak, mahogany.  It is AB grade plywood.

c)Cabinet grade plywood:  It is used to refer as ash and birch hardwood plywood.

d)Marine plywood: It is used for constructing boats; marine plywood is especially treated to avoid it getting rotten in high moisture environments.

It is manufactured with no core gap that occurs due to cracks and knot holes. Water Boiled Proof glue is similar to the one that is used to bond the layers together. It certainly affects the price.

This is more expensive as compared to standard plywood.

e)Particle Board:  This is made up of saw dust, shavings as well as tiny pieces of wood. These are mixed with the glue and then presses into the sheets. It is the most economical. It is commonly used for making shelves and counter tops.

Particle Board is inexpensive as it uses vinyl covered particle board for heavy surfaces that are normally trimmed with solid wood.

f)Medium Density Fibreboard: It is different from particle board, as developed from individual wood fibers instead of saw dust and wood chips.  It creates an extremely flat board having consistency in material thickness and density.

This is perfect for painting or vinyl veneer coating.  It is slightly stronger than Particle Board. When compared to other types, it has the greatest advantage.

g)Apple Ply: This plywood product from Baltic Birch is manufactured from higher number of layers as compared to standard softwood or hardwood plywood.  It is prepared from uniform laminations of 1/16”.

It is available in thickness ranging from ¼” to 1-1/4” inches in sheets up to 10’ long.

Apart from those mentioned here, there are also several other plywood types that one can purchase as per the choice, budget and requirement.

The important part here is application. Selection of plywood largely depends on where you wish to apply it.

If soft plywood serves the purpose then there’s no need to use Apple Ply. Think about the application and based on that selection can be made.

Final Notes:

Always purchase the plywood from reliable plywood suppliers at affordable costs. Make no haste in purchasing it.
